Students

The Ensembles-in-Schools program allows small groups of Springfield Symphony musicians to travel to area elementary and middle schools to perform for the students. Each small ensemble presents a 30-minute program at each school visited. These brief programs are designed to heighten awareness of a variety of musical styles, to explain why different musical instruments create different sounds, and to demonstrate how music expresses emotions and creates beauty. A question-and-answer session following each performance allows the young students to learn from the musicians and creates a more rewarding educational experience for the students. The Ensembles-in-Schools program provides a significant experience in musical education. This outreach is critically important to the quality of education in the Springfield community.

The Springfield Symphony works with Springfield Public Schools and the Springfield arts community as members of the Any Given Child program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Selected because of a demonstrated commitment to the improvement of education in and through the arts, the community participates in collaborative efforts to provide equity and access in arts education for all students.

The Springfield Symphony’s 55th Annual Young People’s Concert (YPC) will bring together students from all Springfield R-12 district schools, 50 area school districts, and students from rural, private, parochial and home schools to listen to live symphonic music and to gain valuable exposure to the elements of musical styles and eras. Each of the Young People’s Concerts is specifically designed to be an in-depth learning experience.

Two Young People’s Concerts are planned for this season on Tuesday, March 9 2026 (rescheduled date) at 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM (times are subject to change). On the day of the performances, students and teachers are treated to an enriching cultural experience. The music is interspersed with entertaining facts about each composition. Musical instrumentation is explained, as are differences in musical styles.

Following each performance, the teachers follow up with each class attending in discussing important elements of the musical experience so as to integrate the concert experience into the students’ curriculum.

The Springfield Symphony Guild and the Springfield Symphony Orchestra are proud to offer annual scholarships to students who attend summer music camps, opening the door to meaningful musical experiences for talented young musicians in our community. We want to provide opportunities that can inspire growth, build confidence, and deepen the love of music.

Each year, scholarships are awarded to deserving students in grades 7 through 11 who demonstrate both musical promise and financial need. Applicants must be recommended by their music instructor and meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the official scholarship application. Every application is carefully and thoughtfully reviewed by the Springfield Symphony Guild, with a passion and commitment to supporting the next generation of musicians.

As part of this special recognition, in addition to their award, each scholarship recipient will receive two complimentary vouchers to attend a classical performance in the upcoming Symphony season, allowing them to share this memorable experience with family or friends.

We encourage students who meet the criteria to apply, and invite educators, families, and community members to share this opportunity with young musicians who may benefit. Together, we can continue to inspire, support, and celebrate the musical talent in our community.

2026 Application Deadline: Friday, May 15th
