Spring is nearly here, and the Springfield Symphony Orchestra is bringing the stormy weather.
Join the Springfield Symphony at 7:30 pm on March 1, 2025, at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for “Stormy Weather,” a concert full of thrilling, passionate music you have to experience live.
“Stormy Weather” continues the Springfield Symphony’s 90th anniversary season. Its name, inspired by the 1930s tune, “Stormy Weather,” features a dramatic program of classic symphonic sounds that will shower the hall with excitement. The pieces may be stormy, but the sounds of the symphony will shine a beautiful light.
A musical program that will blow you away
You will delight in the fiery sounds of Grażyna Bacewicz’s “Overture for Orchestra.” The piece opens with a sprint of running strings paired with brass and wind interjections. A few hearty chords pass the spotlight to the winds as the piece flows into a spell of tranquility. The interwoven wind melodies provide a glimpse of relaxation while the energy awaits its return with the renewal of the strings and punctuated brass shortly after. This piece is a vortex of energy, one that will keep you on the edge of your seat until its end.
As a woman of Polish descent in the heat of World War II, writing and premiering “Overture” was no easy feat for Bacewicz. She wrote the piece in 1943, fled from Poland in 1944, and couldn’t premiere the piece until 1945, only after Poland had been liberated from Germany. The emotion and triumph of “Overture” undoubtedly preserve Bacewicz’s journey, crafting an understanding that transcends the boundaries of time.
