Springfield Symphony serves up an orchestral Smorgasbord to kick off 2021
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Springfield Symphony (SSO) will ring in the new year at its classical concert, Smorgasbord on Saturday, January 9th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The program will feature Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 and Grieg’s Piano Concerto featuring guest artist Kyle Orth. These performances will take place at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.
“This is a concert I’ve been looking forward to all year,” stated Music Director and Conductor Kyle Wiley Pickett. “Brahms is my favorite composer of all time. To me his music is the perfect mix of head and heart, or intellect and emotion. Brahms’s second symphony has always been a very special one to me, because it is the first of his symphonies that I conducted. This piece is a gorgeous mix of beautiful melodies, powerful gestures, and spectacular heart-tugging emotions. It is a wonderful feature for the players of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra.”
Although this is the fourth concert of the Springfield Symphony’s “Comfort Food” season, the Smorgasbord concert is the first concert of the season to host a guest artist. Performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto, pianist Kyle Orth will be coming back to the Hammons Hall stage for the first time since 2013. “I’m so happy to welcome back to the stage Kyle Orth, who was the soloist when I was a music director candidate for the orchestra,” said Pickett. “He is a marvelous young performer and I know that he will wow the audience with Greg’s piano concerto. This concerto has always been an audience favorite, and we have not played it for quite some time at the Springfield Symphony. I’m very excited to be presenting it this year.”
Single tickets are currently on sale online at www.springfieldmosymphony.org/tickets. Livestream tickets start at $12 per household and single tickets are $30 per ticket with limited availability. Behind the Baton provides the opportunity to meet Pickett and hear about the music that will be performed at the January 9th concert. The Facebook Live event takes place at 5:45 p.m. on the Thursday before each Springfield Symphony classical concert.
