Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts • 525 S. John Q. Hammons Parkway

Pre-Concert Music 7:00 p.m. • Concert 7:30 p.m.

The orchestra brings the music of the people to the symphony hall at this concert of folk tunes, street music, and popular dances. Márquez’s audience-thrilling Danzón no. 2 has, since its debut in 1994 in Mexico City, become one of the most well-received new works for orchestra, and its catchy beat based on Cuba’s popular Danzón will have you stomping your feet and clapping your hands. We bring back violin virtuoso Giora Schmidt on the Korngold Violin Concerto, full of soaring melodies fit for a movie score. Vaughan Williams used a sixteenth-century English folk song as the basis of his Five variants of Dives and Lazarus, a beautiful reverie for the orchestra. And in Billy the Kid, Copland turns cowboy tunes and American folk songs into art music for the concert hall.
